BELLEVILLE,
KS (August 7) -- J.J. Yeley passed Jerry Coons, Jr. with just two laps
remaining in the 25-lap feature to capture his 20th USAC National win
of the season breaking the record set by A.J. Foyt in 1961. Yeley
made history on the opening night of the 26th annual Belleville Midget
Nationals in the USAC National Midget Car Series. Yeley's 20 USAC
National victories included six Midget Car Series races, 11 Sprint Car
Series races, and three Silvercrown Series races. What may be most
amazing about the feat by Yeley is that the season is just a little
past half over, so there's no telling just how many wins Yeley can
achieve by November when the three USAC National schedules are
completed. Hoosier Racing Tire Corp. is proud to have been the only
tire brand used by Yeley in capturing the 20 wins.
Twenty-four drivers were entered in qualifying on the
1/2-mile Belleville High Banks track with all 24 competitors riding on
the Hoosier brand since the USAC Midget Car Series exclusively uses
Hoosier tires. Alex Harris set fast time of the night with a lap of
17.954 seconds, while Matt Hummel was second followed by Jerry Coons,
Jr., Jay Drake and Marc Dailey in third through fifth, respectively.
J.J. Yeley was sixth fastest in qualifying.
In heat race action, Dave Darland, Craig Carey and
Jerry Coons, Jr. were the winners, while Cory Kruseman and Johnny Rodriguez
were the two Semi race winners.
In the 25-lap feature, Jerry Coons, Jr. led the race's
first 23 circuits before being passed by J.J. Yeley on the
backstretch. Yeley led the remainder of the way to take the historic
win in front of a cheering crowd. Jerry Coons Jr. finished in second
followed by Jay Drake, Scott Hatton and Brian Gerster.
