CHICO,
CA (September 6-7) -- The 3-day Gold Cup Race of Champions was
contested at Silver Dollar Speedway over the weekend in Chico, CA in
the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series with all three nights ending in
the familiar 1-2-3 sweep for Team-Hoosier. After Steve Kinser, Brad
Furr and Mark Kinser finished one-two-three in the opener on Thursday,
Tim Kaeding, Sammy Swindell and Daryn Pittman swept the podium for
Hoosier on Friday which was then followed by Steve Kinser, Tim Kaeding
and Tim Shaffer completing the weekend podium sweep for the purple
team on Saturday. Saturday's 1-2-3 finish was also the 57th of the
year for Team-Hoosier in 80 nights of racing.
SECOND PRELIMINARY
CHICO, CA (September 6) -- A Hoosier-shod winner wasn't a sure thing
as was the case in the first preliminary when all 45 combatants rode
on Hoosier tires. On Friday, 36 of the 39 drivers not competing on
Thursday rode atop the Hoosier brand.
Joey Saldana, using a pair of Hoosier D10's, set fast
time of 12.183 seconds around the 1/4-mile oval. All told, Hoosier
tires were on seven of the top eight qualifiers.
Three of the four preliminary heat races were won by
Hoosier-shod drivers. Sammy Swindell, Johnny Gray and Jim Skinner each
won their respective heat race.
Sammy Swindell won the first dash on a pair of D10's
and the right to start the feature on the pole.
In the 30-lap feature, Swindell jumped out to the
early race lead. But on lap four, fifth starting Tim Kaeding took over
the race lead from the cagey veteran. Kaeding would lead 26 of the remaining
27 laps to capture the $5,000 win--losing the lead just once on lap 25
to Swindell who settled for runner-up honors and a check for $3,000.
Kaeding opted to run the 30-lap race on a D10/RD12 combination, while
Swindell used a pair of RD12's as did third place finisher Daryn
Pittman who started ninth. Pittman collected $2,500 for the final
podium spot.
Other top ten finishers on Hoosier tires were Craig
Dollansky (4th), P.J. Chesson (5th), Brent Kaeding (7th), Danny
Lasoski (8th), Johnny Gray (9th), and Jason Statler (10th).
A-MAIN
CHICO, CA (September 7) -- On the final night of competition, there
was no qualifying. Points were awarded for the two preliminary nights
of racing which determined the first four positions in 40-lap feature.
Steve Kinser, Tim Shaffer, Tim Kaeding and Sammy Swindell were the
lucky four and all ride on Hoosier tires. Of the 84 competitors, 81
elected to trust Hoosier tires on the final night of
competition.
In the 40-lap feature, Steve Kinser, using a pair of
RD12's, took the early race lead from the pole. The 16-time champion
led until lap 13, when Tim Shaffer moved into the lead after starting
from the outside pole. Shaffer used a D10/RD12 set-up in the feature.
Shaffer's lead lasted until lap 27, when Friday's winner, Tim Kaeding
took a turn at the point. Kaeding, riding the same D10/RD12
combination as Shaffer, held the lead until Steve Kinser regained the
race lead with five laps to go. Kinser held on to take the win and
collect the $25,000 prize.
Tim Kaeding wound up in second and pocketed $11,000.
Tim Shaffer settled for third and took home $5,500. The 1-2-3 finish
by Hoosier-shod drivers was the 57th in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws
Series and also marked the 44th consecutive race that Team-Hoosier has
been in the winner's circle.
Rounding out the list of top ten finishers on Hoosiers
were Danny Lasoski (4th), Sammy Swindell (5th), Craig Dollansky (6th),
Daryn Pittman (8th), Mark Kinser (9th), and Jason Meyers (10th) as
Team-Hoosier claimed 18 of the top 19 finishing positions.
Steve Kinser remains atop the series standings
followed by seven more Hoosier-shod drivers as Hoosier lays claim to
nine of the top ten spots in the standings.
The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series will resume
action this Thursday at Texas Motor Speedway for the 2-day Texas
Showdown.
Special thanks goes out to Hoosier engineer John
Reynolds who attended the 3-day event and reported the details for
