ROSEBURG,
OR (September 21) -- Austin Cameron overcame a couple early setbacks
to emerge the winner in Saturday's NASCAR Winston West Series NAPA
Auto Parts 200 at Douglas County Speedway. Cameron battled back from a
lap-down deficit en route to capturing his fifth win of the season.
Cameron's win also closes the distance in the series standings between
Cameron and points leader Eric Norris to just 36 points with one race
remaining on the schedule.
Twenty-two cars started Saturday's $112,959 event with
Scott Gaylord winning the Bud Pole Award for the second consecutive
race. Gaylord, along with Austin Cameron, started the race on the
front row. In capturing the pole, Gaylord and his Hoosier-shod ride
set a new track record on the recently renovated Douglas County
Speedway's 1/2-mile oval. Gaylord's record setting lap was good for an
average speed of 113.665 mph.
At the outset, it was Scott Gaylord setting the pace
during the race's first 100 circuits. Austin Cameron on the other hand
struggled early as the NAPA/Martin Senour Chevrolet driver spun two
separate times and wound up a lap down. But a series of caution flags
allowed the El Cajon, CA driver to make up the deficit and close in
late for the win. Cameron made his race-winning pass on lap 196 over
then race leader Johnny Borneman. With the 200-lap race extended to
205 laps due to a late race caution, Cameron held on for the final 10
laps to capture the win--his fifth of the season. Cameron pocketed
$9,783 for the win.
Finishing in second place was current series points
leader Eric Norris. Norris earned $6,493 for the runner-up finish.
Eric Holmes rounded out the top three and collected $3,440.
Eight of the 22 race starters finished the race on the
lead lap. Mike Duncan, Brandon Ash, Eddy McKean, Kevin Richards, and
Johnny Borneman finished fourth through eighth, respectively.
The tenth and final race on the NASCAR Winston West
Series schedule is October 12th, at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
